So Happy Valentine’s Day dear readers. May your day be filled with love and kindness. I hope you enjoy today’s writing sample.
7 Day Writing Challenge – Day 4 – HEART
My hands are sweating, and I keep tugging at my dress. Oh, why did I agree to this? A date, really? A blind date at that. Maggie insisted and I have said no so many times before that I finally gave in this time. “Stop Bev,” Maggie chided. “I’m sorry. I can’t believe I let you talk me into this. I have not dated since, well you know since when,” I cried. “Exactly!” she said with such conviction.
It has been a little over a year since I even considered dating someone. I don’t know if I am ready. One year ago, my life was so different, drastically different. “Seriously Maggie, I don’t think I can do this. Please let’s just go,” I tried to grab her hand and pull her away from the coffee shop. “Bev it is coffee. A double date for just coffee. You got a new life one year ago. A new heart. You are clean and sober. It is now time for you to enjoy your life,” my dear friend said as she grabbed my hand and pleaded with me. I run my hand over my scar. She is right. It is time to start living again.
Maggie and I find a table as we wait for our dates. Her boyfriend was bringing a golf buddy of his that he swears to Maggie is a perfect match for me. I chuckle at that because I do not even know what the perfect match is for me. I am a website designer and work from home. I can spend an entire week in my pajamas thanks to living in the city. Everything can be delivered to you. Maggie is a social worker and my best friend. She helped me get to where I am at today. I am a recovering alcoholic. Of course, that is what ultimately saved my life.
A little over a year ago I was in a wreck. A wreck I caused because I was plastered. Thankfully I did not hurt anyone else but during my ER visit they found out my heart was not working right. Actually, I was told, “Bev your heart is barely pumping blood to where it needs to go. I am surprised you can even walk around. You need a transplant now or you will die.” That was Dr. Sing. I entered a 30-day inpatient program to detox which almost killed me and was placed on the transplant list in the hopes of getting a heart before mine decided it had enough.
Strangely I did not wait long. Before I even left the hospital, I had surgery and received a heart from one of the individuals that died in a mass train accident. I touch my scar again as I think about the moment, I met his family. That was their only request. His name was River Hearrt. Fitting, right?
Maggie shakes me out of my daydreaming as our dates approach the table. Maggie’s boyfriend moves aside as he says, “Bev, this is my great golf friend, Lake Hearrt.” My heart skipped a beat. He was River’s twin.
Ok, dear readers, what did you think? I am really enjoying this creative writing challenge. I recently took a creative writing class online and it said to write daily to improve your skills. Tomorrow the inspirational word is BUTTON. I am thinking of another poem for this word. Let me see your work. Either post a link in the comments or tag me in your post so I can check it out and share it! XOXO.
